GO Train Suburbs: What Each GTA Line Actually Offers Commuters
A plain guide to the GO Transit lines that serve GTA home buyers, which run frequent all-day service and which are limited to peak-direction trips.
Not all GO Transit lines offer the same level of service, and that difference matters more to a home search than most buyers realize. Some lines run frequent, two-way, all-day trains; others run a handful of peak-period, one-direction trips and go quiet the rest of the day.
Lines with frequent, all-day two-way service
Lakeshore West (Union to Hamilton, through Mississauga, Oakville, and Burlington) and Lakeshore East (Union to Oshawa, through Scarborough, Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby) are GO's busiest corridors, with regular service running through most of the day in both directions, not just during rush hour. If your work hours or plans don't line up with a traditional 9-to-5 commute, these two lines are the most forgiving.
Lines with strong peak service, thinner off-peak
The Barrie line (Union through Aurora and Newmarket to Barrie) and the Kitchener line (Union through Brampton and Georgetown to Kitchener) run solid weekday service with good peak-hour frequency, but service thins out considerably outside rush hour and on weekends compared to the two Lakeshore lines. The Stouffville line (Union through Markham and Unionville toward Lincolnville) follows a similar pattern.
Lines with limited, mostly peak-only service
The Milton line and the Richmond Hill line currently run a smaller number of trips concentrated in peak periods and in the peak direction, meaning a return trip midday or a reverse commute can mean a much longer wait, or driving instead. If you're evaluating Milton or Richmond Hill specifically for a GO commute, check current trip times directly against your actual schedule rather than assuming it matches the Lakeshore lines.
What this means for a home search
A city being "on the GO line" isn't the same guarantee everywhere. Two homes an equal distance from downtown, one in Ajax on the Lakeshore East line and one in Milton on a peak-only line, can mean very different commute realities depending on what hours you actually work. It's worth checking a line's real schedule, not just its presence on the map, before commute distance becomes a factor in your budget.
FAQ
Which GO line has the best all-day service?
Lakeshore East and Lakeshore West are GO Transit's most frequent lines, with regular two-way service running through most of the day, not just during rush hour.
Is the Milton line good for a reverse commute?
The Milton line's service is concentrated in peak periods and the peak direction, so a reverse commute (into Milton in the morning, out in the evening) has meaningfully fewer options than a standard inbound commute. Check current schedules directly if that's your situation.
