A subway stop changed how this city grows

Vaughan spent decades as a detached-home suburb, and most of it still is, Woodbridge in particular is known for large homes on generous lots and a strong Italian-Canadian community that shaped the area for generations. That changed in 2017, when the TTC subway extension reached Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, the first subway station outside Toronto proper. VMC has since grown into a genuine highrise district, condo towers built specifically around the station, a different kind of Vaughan buyer than the one Woodbridge has always attracted.

The other end of the city

Kleinburg, in Vaughan's north end, is a smaller, more rural-feeling pocket, known for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and newer estate-style subdivisions built to match the area's character. Maple and Thornhill (the part that falls in Vaughan rather than Markham) fill in the middle with a mix of family subdivisions from the 1980s onward.

Vaughan is a common first search for families and move-up buyers leaving Toronto for more space without leaving the GTA, alongside a newer wave of buyers specifically targeting VMC condos for the direct subway line into downtown.

Getting around

The TTC subway's Line 1 extension serves Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Highway 407 stations, GO Transit's Barrie line runs through Maple and Rutherford, and Highways 400 and 407 both cross the city, making Vaughan one of the better-connected 905 cities for a downtown commute.
