A young town built around its waterfront

Ajax's name comes from a WWII naval ship, but most of its housing dates to a single, more recent building boom, the 1990s and 2000s, when subdivisions of detached homes and townhomes filled in the space between the lake and Highway 401. There isn't an old-town core the way there is in some of its Durham neighbours; Ajax reads as a consistently newer, more uniformly suburban housing stock across most of the city.

The lakefront is the exception

The Ajax Waterfront Trail runs the length of the town along Lake Ontario, and the neighbourhoods closest to it carry a premium over the inland subdivisions, without straying far in home age or style from the rest of the town.

Who's searching here

Ajax draws a lot of first-time buyers and young families who've been priced out of Toronto and Pickering and are trading commute distance for a detached home and a yard, plus GO commuters comparing the trip against Whitby and Oshawa further east.

Getting around

GO Transit's Lakeshore East line serves Ajax station on its way into Union Station, and Highway 401 runs along the town's northern edge, making it the primary route in and out for drivers.
